The Beast Has Awakened: Asian Fusion Lands in Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes just got a serious flavor upgrade.
I recently attended the soft opening for Beast of the East Mammoth Lakes and walked away impressed. This is more than another new restaurant. It feels like a genuine addition the town has been missing, arriving at the right moment with the right energy.
Asian Fusion Dining Comes to Mammoth Lakes
Beast of the East offers an Asian fusion approach that pulls from Thai, Japanese, Korean, and Chinese cooking traditions. The dishes feel creative yet approachable. The space itself stands out too. Artwork lines the walls in a rotating gallery setup where diners can purchase pieces, and the overall atmosphere carries a creative edge shaped by the owners’ backgrounds in music, art, snowboarding, and skate culture.
BJ James and Toshiko (Aki) Casas, the same pair behind Gojira Ramen & Sushi in Mammoth and Bishop, are the force behind this project. Their soft opening made it clear they know how to deliver. The food held up, the room had good energy, and the place already feels like it belongs in Mammoth Lakes.
Little Beast: Japanese-Inspired Grab-and-Go Market
Sharing the same location is Little Beast (also called Lil Beast), a grab-and-go market concept inspired by Japanese convenience stores. Expect build-your-own sushi burritos and poke bowls, ready-made bento boxes, and other quick, interesting options. It’s the kind of stop that works before a hike, after a day on the mountain, or anytime you want something different without sitting down for a full meal.
New Restaurants Cluster on Old Mammoth Road
What makes this corner especially interesting is the cluster of new concepts forming around it. Right next door is the recently opened Bird and the Biscuit, a Southern-inspired fast-casual spot centered on biscuits made from scratch every day. Think breakfast sandwiches, crispy chicken, and other comforting dishes built around those fresh biscuits. The place already feels both familiar and new for Mammoth.
Just up the street, Harmony Brazilian Steakhouse & Bar has also opened. It brings a classic Brazilian churrascaria experience with rodizio-style meats carved at the table, a lively setting, and the full spread of salads, sides, and traditional Brazilian dishes. The contrast between Asian fusion, Southern biscuits, and Brazilian grilled meats gives Old Mammoth Road a wider range of options than it had before.
Why New Restaurants Matter in Mammoth Lakes
In recent years Mammoth has lost as many as eight restaurants to redevelopment, the pandemic, and the natural turnover that comes with a mountain town. Good restaurant space remains in high demand, and the community stays eager for new places to eat.
We’re still watching with interest what will happen at the former Slocums Grill and Bar location on Main Street, which was recently sold by Matthew Lehman Real Estate. That longtime landmark carries a lot of history, and the next chapter there will matter. In the meantime, Beast of the East, Little Beast, Bird and the Biscuit, and Harmony are already bringing fresh concepts into the mix.
Ribbon Cutting and How to Visit
The official ribbon cutting for Beast of the East and Little Beast takes place Monday, August 3 from 4 to 5 p.m. at 26 Old Mammoth Road, in the DIY parking lot next to Bird and the Biscuit. Everyone is welcome. Stop by, meet BJ and Toshiko, explore both concepts, and get a first look at what’s in store.
