Where is “Old Mammoth”?

In Mammoth Lakes when one speaks of Old Mammoth they are generally referring to the neighborhood along Old Mammoth Road at the southern most end of Mammoth Lakes, particularly where Old Mammoth Road runs east and west from the Mammoth Creek Park to the Bluffs Neighborhood.

Old Mammoth is appropriately named as this was the original camp where mining took hold during the mid-1800’s.   Most of the pioneers to the area started as gold prospectors, living up near the lakes basin of Mammoth Lakes; closer to the mines.  Other settlers made their homes in the flatter areas what is now the Snowcreek Athletic Club.  If you want to learn more about Mammoth’s history, visit the Mammoth Lakes Museum or Hayden Cabin

Adventuring around the Old Mammoth Neighborhoods will reveal remnants of the mining days or even earlier periods when the Native Americans lived in and hunted this area.   Today’s inhabitants are mostly local residents looking for a quiet neighborhood free of the animation available in other Mammoth neighborhoods.   Aside from the Snowcreek Athletic Club, there are essentially no commercial uses in Old Mammoth until Old Mammoth Road meets Mammoth Creek Park.

Some of the streets that make up Old Mammoth include: North Street, Connell Street, Sherwin Street, Tamarack Lane, Sunny Slopes, Waterford, Hill Street, Creek, Summit Street, Crawford Street, Woodman, Mill Street, Red Fir, Ski Trails and Owen.  This map provides an overview of the Old Mammoth Neighborhood
